The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) has begun testing what’s being hailed as the first autonomous police patrol vehicle in the United States. Donated by the nonprofit Policing Lab, this innovative machine marks a new era in law enforcement technology — combining artificial intelligence, automation, and real-time crime data.
According to a recent press release, the PUG (Police Unmanned Ground) Patrol Partner will first appear at community events before being considered for operational deployment across Miami-Dade County.

The PUG Patrol Partner is far more than a remote-controlled robot. It comes equipped with:
- 360-degree surveillance cameras for complete situational awareness.

- A drone launch system mounted on its roof, enabling rapid aerial support when needed.

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz told the Miami Herald that the department intends to deploy the vehicle for road testing — with a deputy in the front seat — once the community provides enough feedback and support.
The self-driving unit will initially operate on pre-determined patrol routes, but its use could expand to active service roles in the near future.
“The PUG could serve as a visible crime deterrent in hotspot areas,” said Cordero-Stutz. “It could also support drone operations during crimes in progress or help inform residents during hurricane evacuations.”
