Governor Ron DeSantis has urged the Florida Legislature to amend the Condo Safety Law, which was enacted after the Surfside tragedy in 2021 that resulted in 98 deaths. This law mandates strict safety inspections and fully funded reserves for aging buildings, beginning next year. DeSantis argues that while the law aims to ensure safety, it has imposed significant financial and logistical challenges on condo associations and homeowners.
At a press conference, DeSantis highlighted the need for a balanced approach that maintains safety without overwhelming residents financially. He mentioned that media pressure played a role in the swift implementation of the law, despite the lack of a thorough investigation into the Surfside collapse.
Residents, including seniors, have reported facing substantial special assessments, causing financial strain. Judith Weinberg, a condo owner in Aventura, expressed confidence that the law could be adjusted to ease the burden.
DeSantis called for legislative action to address these unintended consequences, emphasizing the importance of listening to constituents and developing reforms that alleviate financial pressures while ensuring safety. State Rep. Alex Rizo indicated that the Legislature is open to revising the law but expects any changes to occur after the upcoming election, possibly as early as November 6.
